How To Participate in Crowdsourcing – Right Now

first_imgchris cameron A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Perhaps you have some spare time on your hands, or perhaps you just want to do good for others from the comfort of your desk chair. Either way, a great way to fulfill these needs is to participate in crowdsourcing – community driven conglomerations of small efforts by large crowds of participants. The simplest form of crowdsourcing are online wikis like the open-source encyclopedia Wikipedia, and the Internet Movie Database (IMDb), but there are hundreds, if not thousands, of other great examples. Here are a few great ways to get involved in the wonder of crowdsourcing. This Innovation Series is brought to you by Lexus.Map the WorldOpenStreetMap is what would result if Wikipedia and Google Maps made a baby. The open-source, wiki-based mapping project is leveraging crowdsourcing to create highly detailed, highly accurate maps of the world. The easiest way to get involved is to locate your community on the map and start adding items like parks, businesses, streets, landmarks and other objects to the map. Adding items is as simple as editing Wikipedia articles (which is really easy, if you haven’t tried it).Do you know of a hiking trail in your area that you can’t find on OpenStreetMap? If you want to create an accurate representation of that trail, you can take a GPS device out with you on your next hike and capture the exact coordinates as you walk. Then simply hook up your GPS tracks-compatible device to your computer and upload it to OpenStreetMap.Curate the News Do you know how to find good journalism and want to share a curated list of high-quality stories with the rest of the world? NewsTrust, a growing community of over 15,000 consumers, journalists and educators provides a platform for users to rate and share news stories based on “facts, fairness, context and other core journalistic principles.” So stop yelling at your TV when you don’t agree with Glenn Beck or Keith Olbermann and help the community by curating the news.Use Social Media, Provide Rich DataOne of the best and easiest ways to participate in crowdsourcing is to simply use social media and share information on the Internet. By sharing your thoughts on Twitter, which will be come infinitely more intelligent with the launch of annotations, you can contribute to the fire hose of real-time data that researchers use every day to check the pulse of the world. Similarly, participating on services like Yelp help people crowdsource restaurant reviews. How else would I have known where to find a clam chowder bread bowl on the east side of San Francisco? The real power lies in the data beneath the surface of various forms of social media. As mentioned above, Twitter annotations will create rich metadata from the billions of messages sent each day, but other services like Flickr have loads of metadata included with each photo. Photo data can not only include information about who took the photo, when and where, but also information about the camera, the lens, the shutter speed and lots of other photography-related metadata. Using this data, mashups can and have been made that creatively integrate Flickr photos to reveal fascinating information.Start Your Own Project If these projects don’t float your crowdsourcing boat, create your own! If you want to help raise money for charity, Crowdrise is a great platform to get your efforts off the ground. Founded by actor Edward Norton, Crowdrise lets users create projects, share them on social networks, collect donations and send those donations off to charities. “Charities get the cash, the world is a better place, and everyone likes you more,” the site says.If that’s not up your alley, try checking out one of several lists of crowdsourcing projects out there to participate in. There is an excellent list containing hundreds of examples up on the shared workspace platform PBworks where you’re sure to find something to your liking. If you still want to try your hand creating your own project, check out Wikipedia’s lists of recent projects for inspiration.Photo by Flickr user Ian Ransley. If You Want a Message to Stick, Repeat Yourself

first_imgThe first time you deliver a message to your prospective client or dream client, you should not expect that message to resonate and drive them to take action, regardless of how compelling your case may be. This is true even if you have real influence, and even if you are positioned as a trusted advisor. That first salvo, the first time you say something, barely creates awareness. Your dream client may need time for the message to resonate and before they start to notice evidence, signs, and symptoms that what you are saying is true. Awareness doesn’t happen all at once; it develops over time, and with repetition and variations on the theme. The second time you deliver that same message, it may carry more weight. Because you are continuing to make the case, it proves that you are serious about the change you are recommending. Even if your dream client doesn’t like the idea of change, your consistency and your persistence garners more attention. Your determination gets you heard. To attempt a real change initiative by messaging someone once or twice is not a serious enough attempt for you to expect your dream client abandon what they are doing and shift directions. The third time you recommend the same change, while continuing to point to the mounting evidence that you are correct, providing proof that you are not the only one who recognizes these trends. You explain, again, how what you suggest will improve the results for your dream client. As you do this, you may start developing some real traction around the idea. Maybe you will get your dream client to see your vision on the fourth attempt. Or perhaps the fifth.Too many people place much too much stock in attempting to make a case so compelling and so overwhelming that they can immediately get to “yes” in a single try. If you want a message to resonate and compel action, keep repeating it.last_img read more

Asiad kabaddi medallist alleges bribery demand by Bihar sports official

first_imgSmita Kumari with CM Nitish Kumar after receiving her cash prize.Sullying further the already-blotted image of national sports administrators, an Asian Games gold medallist kabaddi player from Bihar has accused a state sports official of demanding his “commission” from her cash awards.Smita Kumari, a member of the gold medal-winning Indian women’s kabaddi team at the 2010 Asiad in China, has charged Bihar Kabaddi Association secretary Kumar Vijay with insisting that she give him Rs 10 lakh from her cash awards, totalling Rs 36 lakh. After bringing home the gold medal, Smita had received Rs 10 lakh from the President, Rs 15 lakh from the Railways and Rs 11 lakh from the Bihar government. Her coach Mukesh Kumar also accused Vijay of including his daughter and the wife of a male kabaddi player in the Bihar women’s team for the National Games in Jharkhand earlier this year.Claiming that Vijay favoured the two players so that they could land government jobs, coach Mukesh alleged that one of these two players was threemonths pregnant at the time of her selection and did not feature in a single match at the Games. The state government provides jobs to all players who win medals at national or international events, the coach said about Vijay’s strategy. He added that the Bihar kabaddi team ultimately won the bronze medal.Smita Kumari, popularly known as the ‘Golden girl’ of Bihar kabaddi said, “He had been demanding Rs 10 lakh from me ever since I won the cash awards following the Asian games win.advertisement”When I refused, he threatened to ruin my career. But I told him that I’d rather set up a kabaddi academy in Bihar than give him the money.” She added, “After this incident, I was removed as captain of the state’s team for the Veer Kuer Singh All-India Gold Cup Tournament in Patna last week.” Vijay had been harassing many other players but they were scared of speaking out against the powerful official, she claimed.Rubbishing her charges, however, Vijay threatened to drag the player to court. “Smita is levelling these baseless charges against me only because she has been dropped as the state team’s captain,” he said, He also added that an upset Smita had since been threatening to embarrass him.”Had I been harassing the players, Smita would not have been able to make a mark at the international level. The state’s team woudln’t have won so many gold medals,” he pointed out.Vijay claimed that rather than taking money from any player, he had often helped them financially. Smita, who had recently got married, stayed away from the mandatory practice sessions, he said. The player’s allegations have created ripples in the sports fraternity here, with several state team players coming out in open to support Kumar Vijay.last_img read more

Gopinath Munde skips crucial BJP meet, party remains hopeful

first_imgSenior BJP leader Gopinath Munde on Tuesday stayed away from a crucial meeting of party’s MPs, MLAs and MLCs from Maharashtra, convened by state chief Sudhir Mungantiwar in the wake of the former’s rebellion. Party’s leaders however maintained that he would continue with the party and differences would be sorted out soon. The meeting followed speculation that after failing to get the party leadership to concede to his demands, Munde – the BJP’s deputy leader in the Lok Sabha – was on his way to join the Congress. After the meeting, Munde supporters left for his residence in Worli for further discussion over the issue. Leader of Opposition in the assembly Eknath Khadse said he was confident that Munde would not leave the party.Munde’s legislator daughter Pankaja Palve also sought to play down reports of her father breaking away from the BJP. She said there has been no offer to join any other party from anyone. In Delhi, former BJP chief Rajnath Singh said Munde would remain in the party and differences would be sorted out soon.Party spokesman Shahnawaz Hussain said central leadership’s talks with Munde were positive. Denying any knowledge that Munde was in talks with the Congress, he said, “Gopinath Munde was in Delhi where he met with senior leaders. Talks are positive and still underway. We will let the press know further developments.”Earlier, a meeting of the BJP top brass at senior leader L.K. Advani’s residence on Monday evening had apparently failed to convince Munde. Sources said the Pune BJP chief’s post, where Gadkari loyalist Vilas Mathkari was appointed over Munde’s candidate Yogesh Gogawale, remains a problem area with both the leaders from Maharashtra refusing to budge.advertisementFor more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more

UP’s time to shine?

first_img“There’s no such thing as perfect volleyball,” she said. “We just have to look at things that we’re still missing” and improve on them.UP head coach Godfrey Okumu has an inkling on what the Lady Maroons need to work on.“We had many unforced errors and we should correct that,” he said, pointing to the 42 points UP gave UE through unforced errors. “Our defense was up to standard. And when we focus we play well.”UE had a seven-point edge off unforced errors, yielding 35 to UP. But mostly, the Lady Warriors’ defense was also up to the task, especially in the back row, where UE kept several UP kill attempts in play. That defense backstopped an offense that was shouldered mostly by springy Judith Abil, who peppered UP with 20 points. In the middle of UE’s defense was skipper Kath Arado who said the Lady Maroons did a good job of trying to keep her out of play.ADVERTISEMENT “This isn’t the best UP team,” she said in Filipino, after the Lady Maroons weathered quite a storm before hammering out a 25-12, 22-25, 23-25, 25-19, 15-12 victory over University of the East on Saturday at the start of the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.“We’re just trying to become a better version of UP,” she added.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSUrgent reply from Philippine ‍football chiefSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesThe Lady Maroons need a sense of urgency, too. In the offseason, they played like a team rushing to fulfill a potential people saw when Molde and fellow stars Tots Carlos and Justine Dorog joined the squad. They won two offseason titles heading into this UAAP season. But at the Filoil Flying V Centre Saturday, UP wobbled like an inexperienced squad and trailed after three sets before relying on Molde, Carlos and Dorog to see off scrappy UE. “I wasn’t receiving any attacks since the first set so I kept trying to find good positions for myself because nothing came my way,” Arado said in Filipino. “I got fired up and I think … UP’s game plan was to really avoid me.”Arado also summed UE’s newfound confidence despite finishing poorly last season—proof that the Lady Warriors no longer think of themselves as just another easy schedule on their opponents’ calendars.“We have 13 more games and some additional in the Final Four,” Arado said. “We just didn’t have it in the end; we ran out of gas.”UE had UP on the ropes in the opening match of Saturday’s doubleheader—Far Eastern University dismantled National U, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-12, in the second game—and the Lady Maroons needed to gut out a strong fourth set to stay alive. It went back-and-forth at the start of the fifth set, before Jessma Ramos and Molde exchanged hits for a 10-7 lead.Molde finished with 23 points to lead the Lady Maroons while Carlos and Dorog had 17 points and 12 points, respectively.Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next MOST READ Private companies step in to help SEA Games hosting Don’t miss out on the latest news and information.
