We could not be more excited for the first annual Fool’s Paradise – a funk-fueled destination beach event hosted by Lettuce – at the St. Augustine Amphitheatre in St. Augustine, Florida on April 1 & 2, 2016.When the amphitheatre lights go down, the party is not over. In addition to Late Night events featuring Vulfpeck, Break Science, Goldfish and a ‘Fools of Funk’ supergroup, Fool’s Paradise is excited to announce “Fool Moon,” a new late-night offering at St. Augustine music scene staple (and grilled cheese emporium), Planet Sarbez.Less than two miles from the St. Augustine Amphitheatre, each Late Night will feature blowout sets by Jacksonville powerhouse Herd of Watts; on Friday they’ll be joined by Gainesville reggae-funk monsters Morning Fatty, and on Saturday MANẎFEST will kickstart the night, with Orlando’s rock machine The Groove Orient shutting it down.Building on the energy from their Fool’s Paradise sets (Herd of Watts, Morning Fatty, Groove Orient), these after-dark shows will feature live painting, special guests, and a unique art-house ambience, easily making this a “must” for everyone’s weekend plans.Tickets for the main festival are still available but going fast, with extremely limited VIP and hotel packages remaining. Fool’s Moon will be a $10 cover at the door, separate from festival and package ticketing. After releasing a cryptic video with dates and vague locations last week, Pretty Lights continues to roll out tour date announcements for what is being dubbed the PL Festival. This week, we’ve been treated with new pieces to the puzzle, with Monday releasing early August dates at the Bank Of New Hampshire Pavilion, Tuesday detailing mid-August plans at Red Rocks Amphitheatre, and today confirming a third weekend in Telluride, CO.Set to take place August 26 & 27 at the beloved Telluride Town Park, the weekend is specified to only contain Pretty Lights, with special guests “The Pretty Lights Family.” Unlike the previously announced weekends, this one has no support listed at this time. In any event, we look forward to an intimate weekend, or “evenings with,” Pretty Lights and the band he’s organized for the tour, featuring Alvin Ford Jr., Brian Coogan, Chris Karns, and Borahm Lee. Last weekend, Phish played three great shows at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, treating fans of dozens of classic Phish songs throughout the weekend. Among the many highlights from the run was the rarity “Guelah Papyrus,” which has been played an average of once per summer for the last few years.The song features a fun dance routine from guitarist Trey Anastasio and bassist Mike Gordon, who flip flop around the stage robotically during the song’s finale. Drummer Jon Fishman even left his kit to join the two in their shenanigans!“Guelah” is always a welcomed addition to any setlist, and its performance at SPAC was quite the memorable occasion. The last time Radiohead played Outside Lands was the festival’s inaugural year in 2008.The sound gave out twice on that Friday night in August, creating a brief, silent rock show for the small eternity it lingered. But Thom Yorke and the rest of the collective didn’t miss a beat, miming their way through the sonic void.Each audio miscue was promptly corrected, and the dense crowd overflowed with joy watching these titans of experimental alternative create the festival’s foothold in the music scene.Saturday night, in their return to the Lands End main stage at Golden Gate Park, silence fell again, but this time it wasn’t a malfunction.The muted reception from the crowd blanketed the tens of thousands watching into an authentic identity crisis, prompting the question of whether you came for a performance or for an experience.With EDM standout Zedd putting on a sensory-touching performance across the park, it was the perfect example of how much the live music culture has changed over the past eight years.“Burn the Witch” and the ambient ways of “Daydreaming,” the first two tracks on A Moon Shaped Pool, kicked off the set with a sort of anti-opener atmosphere that left the gathered speechless and Yorke skyrocketing to his musical pocket.The set was absolute bliss, with moody staples “Everything in its Right Place,” “Pyramid Song,” “Nude” blended around danceable numbers like “Lotus Flower” and “The Gloaming.”“Weird Fishes” and “Paranoid Android” provided a more palatable contrast, but there was certainly a purpose to the song selection.Radiohead’s music pushes boundaries and can make people feel uncomfortable. You’re unknowingly forced to address your true driving force for seeing live music, and many responded to that by turning around and seeking out the electronic dance party instead.There’s nothing wrong with that. Those that wanted to be there got what they wanted. Music festivals are special because of the collective experience they offer, but with Radiohead, the set was a little more selfish, focused more individual enjoyment.And this is why Outside Lands stands apart from many of its peers. It’s a perfect reminder of our history and future, and unites those two worlds with ease every single year.There was a shared experience at the end, though. Just last month, guitarist Jack White announced a new release spotlighting the acoustic side of his career. While White is probably best known for his electric guitar playing, his acoustic efforts have not gone unnoticed. His final live performances before taking a hiatus were all acoustic, and the guitarist has a career’s worth of material for his forthcoming release, Jack White Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016.Today, White has made some exciting announcements surrounding the release. The first involves some late night television action, as fans will get to watch Jack White perform acoustically on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on September 9th! The second is an actual recording from the acoustic release, as White has shared a version of “Carolina Drama” by The Raconteurs featuring acoustic instrumentation.Listen to the newly-released “Carolina Drama” streaming below.Finally, White has also announced that his label, Third Man Records, will be releasing the Acoustic Recordings album on limited-edition blue vinyl. Reed Mathis’ Electric Beethoven recently came on the scene and has been taking the jam world by storm as of late. Last night, as demonstrators continued to stand their ground in opposition to the Dakota Access pipeline (DAPL) on Standing Rock Indian Preservation, a group of musicians came together in Washington, D.C. to host a benefit concert to raise funds for the resistance effort. Billed as “Stand for Standing Rock,” the event at DAR Constitution Hall was hosted and headlined by Dave Matthews and featured performances by R&B artist Ledisi, Neko Case (The New Pornographers), Graham Nash, and frequent Matthews collaborator Tim Reynolds.In addition to the evening’s famous performers, Matthews invited many members of tribe to perform and speak, including 23-year-old Kendrick Eagle, who shared his experiences meeting President Obama on a few occasions. “He told us he had our backs as long as he’s in office. And now we need him more than ever, and that’s why I’m here.”After introducing the evening’s various sets of music and speaking on several occasions, Matthews and Reynolds finally took the stage for their headlining set. Easily a highlight of their performance, Matthews told a story about his experience visiting the protestors’ camp at Standing Rock: “The whole experience at the camp exploded my brain and I don’t know what to do about it” said the singer/guitarist. He then debuted a new song about that experience entitled “Song For Billijo”. New Orleans-based saxophonist Khris Royal has been busy over the last year! When he’s not touring with Rebelution or playing with George Porter Jr. & The Runnin’ Pardners, Royal has been hard at work with his own band, Dark Matter, which features Big Sam Williams (trombone), John Michael Bradford (trumpet), Danny Abel (guitar), and Max Moran (bass).This weekend, Khris Royal & Dark Matter shared their brand new single “Step Children” featuring the one and only Nigel Hall on the Rhodes organ. Says Royal of the track, “‘Step Children’ is a tribute to funk night at Wally’s, the historic jazz club in Boston where I played three nights a week while attending Berklee Collage. The Tuesday night band was called Step Children. No one really knows how they got the name. Some people say it’s because they were treated like step children because the Straight Ahead Band was treated better. They played on Fridays and Saturdays.You can listen to “Step Children” below, via Royal’s SoundCloud:Royal explained the personal significance and backstory of the song to Live For Live Music: “When I first got to Berklee I was only 17 and Wally’s was 21 and up so I never tried to go. One day, Nikki Glaspie (Dumpstaphunk, Beyonce, Nth Power) and James Casey (Trey Anastasio Band) told me I had to go with them because Nikki was playing there with (frequent Soulive collaborator) Sam Kinninger . I had no idea Sam played there every Tuesday, so I went with them and Nikki got me in. A week later, Amy and Aaron Bellamy called me because Sam was leaving to tour with Soulive, and I ended up filling in with the Step Children Wally’s. Playing there with that band changed the way I play. Up until that point, I had always looked at myself as a jazz cat. The Step Children made me realize I wanted to be able to play everything.”Continues Royal, “It was only natural to have Nigel Hall on this track. Nigel moved to Boston right as I was leaving for Los Angeles. He would come sit in with us every week so he totally understands the spirit of Wally’s and the Step Children. It doesn’t seem that long ago that Matisyahu was a burgeoning name on the scene, making a career-altering appearance with jam icon Trey Anastasio at Bonnaroo back in 2005. Now, twelve years later, the reggae-rock artist has toured the world over, released multiple albums, and evolved both personally and artistically. The former Phish tour kid will be playing a special late-night performance at NYC’s The Cutting Room following Phish’s performance at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday, August 2nd as part of their Baker’s Dozen run.Phishin’ With Matisyahu: How LSD “Turned My Entire World Inside Out”Matisyahu just released his latest album, Undercurrent, on May 19th, and will be on tour in support of the album throughout the summer. The album was created and produced by Matis and fellow band members Stu Brooks (bass, keys, musical director), Time Keiper (drums), and Aaron Dugan (guitar) only. No outside producers, no post-production — to put it plainly, no compromises and no frills. What came out of these sessions is music in its purest form, with special guest spots from friends and longtime collaborators BigYuki and Joe Tomino adding some timely flourishes throughout the album.Before Undercurrent, in September, Matis released the single “Love Born” (listen above) and discussed the track and its deeper meaning in context to both the good and bad that each of us goes through. “‘Love Born’ is about accepting pain and learning to transform it. It’s the ability to look back at one’s history and bring close those moments of pain and confusion and work with them in the present to evolve with strength to one’s future,” explains Matisyahu. “Life has no cushion, music has no net.
