THE scramble for points to qualify for Jamaica’s combined martial arts team’s 2016 squad continues this weekend with former captain Jason McKay heading to the New York circuit in 14th spot, desperately needing to climb four places up the rankings.The veteran fighter will participate in two of New York’s toughest tournaments in a bid to make up lost ground on fighters who have gained points on the local circuit, in addition to the United States Open in July, as well asvarious championships in Portugal, South Africa, Italy and, most recently, Russia.twin towers startMcKay, whose points tally has been affected by him travelling as a coach five times this season, competing only twice, will start his bid at the 24th Twin Towers Classic International Martial Arts Competition, which features karate, tae kwon do and kung fu open at the Resorts World Casino, Queens, New York, on Saturday.On Sunday, he will be in action at the 20th New York Taekwon-Do Tournament, hosted by Queens Taekwon-Do Center at Queens College Fitzgerald Gymnasium.Queens Taekwon-Do Center is operated by eighth-degree Master Ruben Suarez and is the home of the Carlos brothers, Emmanuel and Julio, a two-time International Taekwon-Do Federation world lightweight sparring champion.”I have only competed twice this year. I won at the New York Legacy Cup and took home bronze from the United States Taekwon-Do Federation Nationals in Boston,” McKay told The Gleaner.”Being the founder and former captain of the team does not exclude me from qualifying like everybody else. I have been sharing duties as coach, but those were my decisions, so I have to get down in the tunnels now,” he added.McKay is aiming to make the squad for a 15th consecutive season.- A.W.
STORMWATCH UPDATE: FURTHER heavy falls of hail, sleet and snow are hitting Donegal this afternoon – with ice predicted on all roads overnight.Gardaí have issued an urgent warning to motorists to take extreme care.There have been a number of minor traffic crashes in Donegal today due to the road conditions. One hail storm is currently moving east to west across the county.Said a Garda spokesman: “We would urge motorists not to drive unless absolutely necessary and where people are out and about this evening, they should drive with extreme care.“Roads, particularly in rural areas and in housing estates in towns, are very slippery and with ice expected to form after dark, this will make conditions more hazardous.”Donegal County Council gritting lorries are treating main routes. BBC Northern Ireland and Met Eireann says there will be more wintry showers tonight before cloud clears and temperatures drop.A new gale will sweep into Donegal around 10am on Friday.
