ICC World Cup ICC Cricket World Cup semi-final scenarios: England bounce back, Pakistan under pressure

first_img New Delhi: The race for the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup semi-finals has intensified with the result of the India vs England clash in Edgbaston. Virat Kohli’s Indian cricket team were undone by a disciplined bowling effort from England and a century from Jonny Bairstow as England won by 31 runs, their first win against India since the 1992 World Cup clash in Perth. England’s win has once again opened up the entire play-off race with five teams fighting for three positions. With only one week of league games remaining, the pressure is on England, New Zealand, Pakistan and Bangladesh to ensure that they do not slip up in their remaining games. Here is what the remaining six teams have to do to seal a spot in the semis. India P – 7, W – 5, L – 1, N/R – 1, Points – 11 Position in table: 2nd Games remaining: vs Bangladesh (July 2), vs Sri Lanka (July 6) What they must do: India’s loss has once again opened up the race for the semi-finals. However, they need to win only one out of their remaining games to qualify. If Australia win against South Africa, they will end up in second. If India lose their remaining games by a massive margin and England win against New Zealand and Pakistan thrash Bangladesh, then India could be eliminated. New Zealand P – 8, W – 5, L – 2, N/R – 1, Points – 11Position in table: 3rd Game remaining: vs England (July 3) What they must do: If they lose to England, they will have to hope Bangladesh beat India and lose to Pakistan. They will have to hope Pakistan do not win by a massive margin against Bangladesh while New Zealand do not suffer a heavy defeat to England. A win for the Kiwis seals their spot in the semi-final. England P – 8, W – 5 – L – 3, N/R – 0, Points – 10 Position in table: 4th Game remaining: vs New Zealand (July 3) What they must do: If England win, they will qualify. If they lose to New Zealand, they will have to hope Sri Lanka lose one of their remaining games and that Bangladesh lose to India and beat Pakistan. In that scenario, England can still qualify for the semi-final with 10 points. Pakistan P – 8, W – 4, L – 3, N/R – 1, Points – 9 Position in table: 5th Game remaining: vs Bangladesh (July 5) What they must do: If they beat Bangladesh, they will have to hope New Zealand beat England and that Bangladesh do not win against India. However, their poor net run-rate of -0.792 is a big problem and they will have to hope New Zealand suffer a big defeat against England and that they beat Bangladesh by a big margin. Bangladesh P – 7, W – 3, L – 3, N/R – 1, Points – 7 Position in table: 6th Games remaining: vs India (July 2), vs Pakistan (July 5) What they must do: Both their games are now a must-win. If they lose one game, they will be knocked out of the tournament.  India are one win away from the semi-finals in 2019 World Cup.England won against India for the first time after 27 years.Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh face a must-win situation. Jimmy Nelson’s long road back could lead to Dodgers bullpen

first_imgThe Brewers did not see enough to warrant a contract offer to the arbitration-eligible Nelson. The Dodgers – looking for “upside plays,” as Dodgers president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman put it – bought the lottery ticket for a modest $1.25 million salary in 2020 plus bonuses and an option for 2021 that could make the contract worth as much as $13 million over two years.“In 2017, in our opinion, he was one of the better starters in the National League. Then obviously the injuries set in,” Friedman said. “He came back at the tail end of ’19 and his stuff looked a little bit different which you would expect after that amount of layoff.“Right now, it’s just about getting him out there, making sure he’s healthy, building him up. We’ll kind of see where we are at the end and whether it’s a top-starter-in-the-National-League potential or a Brandon Morrow-type bullpen ace. I don’t know. A lot will be determined over the next month.”The Morrow comparison is a good one. He was also a formerly exceptional starter waylaid by injuries when he signed a minor-league deal with the Dodgers in 2017. After opening the season in Triple-A, Morrow joined the Dodgers in late May and became a key piece of their bullpen the rest of the way.Nelson says his priority is on getting and staying healthy – a sore groin muscle limited him early in camp. But he insists his pitch mix is “all the way back.”“I’ve shown last year, with all the data we have nowadays and with the spin rates and perceived velos and your movement profiles and all that, from cleaning up some of my arm action from the shoulder, I actually think and there’s proof that I actually increased some of my spin and some of my movement profiles on certain things,” Nelson said. “So my stuff is a little bit different now but I think it can be different for the better. I think that this organization saw that as well – even though it was a smaller sample size last year.”Nelson said he specifically signed with the Dodgers because of their support system both to maintain his health but also to make the most of his current abilities. If that means a bullpen role – so be it.Related Articles “I had full tears of the labrum, the (rotator) cuff, the capsule. There was some bone and nerve stuff going on. … It was very, very extensive.”Nelson actually went back out to the mound for the bottom of the fifth. With his shoulder essentially shredded, he hit a batter, walked a batter and threw a wild pitch. But he put up another zero. He wouldn’t throw another pitch in a major-league game for 21 months.“It was tough,” Nelson said of the road back, delayed by elbow problems. “It was kind of one of those things where there wasn’t much literature on it. There wasn’t really a path that was paved for the rehab process of what I did.“A lot of dark days. But (I had) a lot of resources, a lot of good people surrounding me as far as from the organization, from your fellow teammates and obviously my family, my wife and just close friends and family. I could lean on them.”When Nelson finally returned to the Brewers’ rotation last June, he was not very good. In three starts he gave up 14 runs in 12 innings then went back on the Injured List with a sore elbow. A rehab assignment and September spent in the bullpen wrapped up his comeback season. Fire danger is on Dave Roberts’ mind as Dodgers head to San Francisco Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start center_img “The last two years I was watching the playoffs from the bench. That was tough. That was really tough for me,” he said.“I don’t care what my role is. I’ve said before I’ve been watching from the bench too much for the last two years. A lot of it was out of my control and dealing with injuries and rehab and all that stuff. But it is very tough. So at this point in my career, I know where I’m at and I want to just be a part of it, you know, I just want to be on the mound competing in whatever capacity.”ALSOOutfielder Joc Pederson is still limited in workouts by a sore right hip. He has not been cleared to swing a bat for four days now. “He’s on a slow program because you just can’t turn seven to 10 days into four weeks,” Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. “We can always kind of make up the at-bats as we go forward.” … Pitcher Clayton Kershaw will make his spring debut Friday in Maryvale against the Milwaukee Brewers and pitcher Walker Buehler will go on Saturday. How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Newsroom GuidelinesNews TipsContact UsReport an Error GLENDALE, Ariz. — In early September 2017, Jimmy Nelson was one of the better young starting pitchers in the National League, a sturdy 28-year-old about to be 12-6 with a 3.49 ERA in 29 starts for the Milwaukee Brewers. And then, he wasn’t.Nelson was spinning a shutout four innings into a Sept. 8 start at Wrigley Field. With one out in the top of the fifth, Nelson lined a base hit into left field, rounded first base hard then thought better of it and scrambled back to first base, diving with his right arm reaching for the bag.“When I went into the bag, I knew I had dislocated my shoulder,” Nelson said. “I dislocated it out and it popped back in. But it was essentially like three or four separate full injuries.last_img read more

Eric Phillips and Charles Ceres applied for ultra-deep-sea oil drilling licence

first_img…with absolutely no experience in such drilling…Phillips should recuse self from SARA’s investigation of other oil blocks – former AGRecent revelations that in addition to questionable land deals State Assets Recovery Agency (SARA) Executive Eric Phillips has a stake and beneficial interests in an oil company angling to get its hands on oil blocks in Guyana are a cause for serious concern.SARA Executive Eric PhillipsFormer Attorney General Anil NandlallThis is according to former Attorney General Anil Nandlall, who, in a recent interview with Guyana Times, pointed out that not only did Phillips have clear political affiliations while operating as an investigator at SARA, but it has now been revealed that he had financial interests in the oil and gas sector, at a time when oil block allocations were being investigated.“I have written articles contending that Eric Phillips (and) Clive Thomas should not be investigators at SARA. They should not hold executives’ positions in SARA, because of the functions of SARA, due to their political affiliations. These are politicians, they cannot be holding positions in law enforcement,” Nandlall said.“Now you have another disclosure that this gentleman has a personal interest in the oil blocks. How can he be an objective investigator, (with) a personal pecuniary interest that obviously contaminates his objectivity?”SARA has of recent turned its attention to investigating the award of various oil blocks to companies such as Ratio Guyana and Mid Atlantic Oil and Gas, on the basis that these companies allegedly have no track record in independently exploring for oil and developing oil blocks. This is despite the fact that ABR Oil and Gas – a company with a given address of 9 Thomas Lands, Georgetown in which Phillips has a 15 per cent stake, along with Charles Ceres (25%); Violet Smith (25%), and Osafo George (15%) – has even less experience in drilling for oil.In their application, there was mention that one of the principals had experience with a company that had drilled a single well on land in the Takutu Basin. This means that no one had experience drilling for undersea oil much less in ultra-deep waters which less than a handful of companies in the entire world has.Despite its newcomer status, it was recently revealed in sections of the media that it has a pending application to explore a Block C offshore concession in an area adjoining the Kaieteur and Canje blocks. In the application, it was stated that the company was seeking the licence for a duration of 10 years. They claimed to be in possession of US$5 million to spend and sources contend the source of the funds should be checked for possible Anti-Money Laundering/Combating the Financing of Terrorism (AML/CFT) violations.According to sources, however, the principals involved could stand to make billions of dollars in profits if they acquired the concession and then sold their stakes in it to more qualified companies. This is a possibility as a number of big names like ExxonMobil and Total have a working interest in the nearby Canje Block.“(Phillips) should, therefore, not be in charge of any investigation in relation to oil blocks,” Nandlall stressed. “You cannot be in charge in an investigative arm of the State if you are politically tainted or if you have vested financial interests. And he has both!”Get richLast month, Opposition Leader Bharrat Jagdeo had dropped a bombshell revelation that Government has been quietly distributing massive tracts of prime State lands to employees of the Ministry of the Presidency as well as to cronies in the People’s National Congress (PNC)-led A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) faction of the coalition Government and officials of SARA, which was formed to recover State assets. The lands were all strategically located to massively benefit the beneficiaries from the coming oil boom. Jagdeo had revealed that most of the leases for these plots of prime real estate were issued by the Guyana Lands and Surveys Commission (GL&SC) after the December passage of the Opposition-sponsored No-Confidence Motion that caused the Government to fall. And of all the names to surface, Phillips had been one of the most prominently featured.Phillips had vehemently denied back in February that he ever applied for, or received 3000 acres of lands as was then being claimed. But the Opposition Leader had pointed to GL&SC File No. 321132/1604 which showed 1000 acres in the Essequibo River was issued to Phillips in April 2019 and File No. 3312317 for another 1000 acres in the Demerara River.last_img read more
