Council to decide how to fund new police station

first_imgWHITTIER – City Council members at their 6:30 p.m. meeting tonight are expected to decide how the city will pay for a new police station. They have two choices: issuing a bond, which would require approval from two-thirds of the city’s voters; or using a combination of reserves from the city’s budget, the Redevelopment Agency’s budget and other reserves. In a written report to the council, police Chief David Singer estimated it will cost between $35 million and $39 million to construct a new three-story, 55,000-square-foot station. But a new station is sorely needed, Singer said, because the existing facility, built in the `50s, is too small. When it was built, the city had just 20 police officers and some support staff. Now, Whittier has 93 officers and 79 support personnel, Singer’s report says.
